HEDONIST HEDONIST
Formed in 2020 in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, HEDONIST is a death metal quartet that turns classic extreme-underground influences into a brutal, raw, and contemporary experience. With Athena on bass and vocals, JP and Anatol on guitars, and Cody on drums, the band combines the cadenced weight of war death metal with the filth of crust punk, the urgency of late-1980s grindcore, and the rhythmic violence of Swedish death metal.
HEDONIST’s origin lies in the partnership between Athena and JP, who decided to start a band based on the meeting point between their different references: the world of death metal and the force of bands like Bolt Thrower. The lineup expanded with Cody on drums and, later, Anatol on second guitar, cementing the quartet that recorded their first full-length album.
The band’s first release, the demo Sepulchral Lacerations, came out on July 8, 2021. With six tracks and about 19 minutes, the work presented a sound geared toward old-guard death metal, with cutting guitar tones, a morbid atmosphere, and clear roots in the tradition of names like Entombed, Dismember, Grave, and Nihilist.
On August 1, 2025, HEDONIST released Scapulimancy, their debut album on Southern Lord Recordings. The record gathers ten tracks across roughly 36 minutes and deepens the band’s formula: crushing riffs, mid-tempo passages, faster bursts, vocals that alternate deep growls and torn screams, plus a deliberately raw, old-school production.
Tracks like “Execution Wheel,” “Heresy,” “Abominated Void,” “Parasitic Realm,” “Scapulimancy,” and “Engines of War” show the group’s ability to balance brutality, melody, and striking structures. Specialized critics pointed to references to Bolt Thrower, Benediction, Entombed, Dismember, and Swedish death metal, without reducing the album to a mere nostalgic reproduction of the past.
The title Scapulimancy itself, associated with the divination practice using bones, reinforces the work’s dark, ritualistic imagery. In her lyrics, Athena says she works with an approach close to poetry, influenced by whatever she’s reading, while the music sustains an atmosphere of war, ruin, horror, and decay.
With the energy of a band forged in the independent punk and metal circuit, HEDONIST keeps a direct relationship with Victoria’s DIY scene and brings to the stage a performance marked by physicality and abandon. The result is death metal with no filters: heavy, dirty, aggressive, and built to reach both those who worship the genre’s classic era and those looking for a current, visceral take on extreme music.
